2014 Southwest Zone Awards

Each year, USA Water Polo solicits and funds awards for coaches, referees, masters and volunteers in each zone. Below are the Southwest Zone Award Winners for 2014 as nominated/selected by the Southwest Zone Board. The award winners are eligible for selection by USA Water Polo for National Coach, Referee, and Volunteer of the year awards. Congratulations to all selected as their effots have helped water polo grow and continue to thrive in the Southwest Zone. Past award winners can be found at the Zone Awards link on this site.

USAWP – Southwest Zone ODP

The Southwest Zone Olympic Development Program (ODP) will begin in a couple weeks at the Southwest Zone ODP Training Camp #1 on November 29-30 at the UT Swim Center in Austin, TX. There will be THREE Southwest Zone ODP Training Camps during the 2014-2015 ODP Season. The Training Camp #2 will be Saturday, January 3rd in North Texas at the Southlake-Carroll ISD Aquatic Center, and the Training Camp #3 will be on Sunday, January 4th in the Houston area (location TBD). All of the Training Camps will have National Team ODP Coaches/Southwest Zone ODP Coaches working with the athletes and evaluating the athletes. Each Training Camp will work on distinct aspects of game (different from camp to camp) and build on the previous camp so it is good to attend as many camps as possible (participants will need sign-up/pay for each camp separately). The Southwest Zone ODP Training Camps are open to ALL USAWP Gold athletes Born in 97, 99, 01 & Younger. Below are the USA Water Polo ODP Overview, age groups, online registration links, Southwest Zone Coaches, etc. for the Southwest Zone Training Camps. In order to be identified for a Southwest Zone ODP team roster, an athlete must attend at least ONE Training Camp. Southwest Zone Teams will be announced AFTER the final Training Camp via email. Athletes selected to a Southwest Zone ODP team will have additional training in January-February and attend the USA Water Polo ODP National Championships in March 2015.

Southwest Zone ODP Age Groups/Coaches: In addition to the Southwest Zone Coaches listed below, there will be National ODP Coaches attending each Training Camp. For the Austin Camp on November 29-30, Adam Ross (Head Girls Development Coach/Rose Bowl Aquatics) and Matt Johnson (Goalie Coach) will be attending. For both the North Texas and Houston Training Camps on January 3-4, Dan Klatt (Head Girls Junior Coach/UC Irvine HC), Zach Koechner (Cadet Team Coach/Assistant Coach UOP), and Matt Johnson (Goalie Coach) will be attending in both locations.

Southwest Zone Training Camp Dates, Locations, and Online Sign-up Links: The Southwest Zone ODP Training Camps are open to ALL USAWP Gold athletes Born in 97, 99, 01 & Younger. In order to register online for a specific Training Camp, athletes must login at www.usawaterpolo.org and sign up/make payments at the following links (sign-up/pay for each camp separately). Online Registration for the Training Camps will be closed on Wednesday evening prior to each Training Camp. There is also a cap of 100 campers (boys/girls combined) at all three Training Camps. Athletes that were part of a National Team roster in 2014 must still attend ONE camp to continue in the pipeline if they are in High School/Middle School. Athletes born in 1996 are welcome to attend the Training Camps, but are ineligible for the Zone Team rosters. Those 1996 & Younger athletes that have previously been identified will receive Junior Team invites.

USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program Overview:
USA Water Polo ODP Website: http://www.usawaterpolo.org/odp/
Purpose: The Olympic Development Program will serve as a forum to identify and develop athletes to represent USA Water Polo throughout domestic and international competition. The foundation of the program is a systematic approach to athlete development through a training program that focuses on both the technical and tactical components of water polo while placing a premium on overall physical fitness. This program will also provide a forum where coaches and referees are provided with professional development and to the vision of our Men and Women’s Senior National Team coaches.
Objective: The Olympic Development Program exists to identify and prepare athletes to represent USAWP in international competition; while exposing, educating, engaging and developing all USAWP athletes, coaches and referees to the vision of our Men’s and Women’s Senior National Team Coaches
Goal: The goal is to identify and develop athletes at the USAWP club level and then integrating them into national team pipeline via the Olympic Development Program.

Connor Cup Series Completed; HOPS, West Houston, Thunder WPC Take Honors

This past weekend’s Dallas Fall Invite represented the final event for the Connor Cup Series for 2014. The Connor Cup is awarded each year to a Men’s team and a Women’s team based on participation and results at five annual events in the Southwest Zone. In the Open Division, HOPS retained the Cup with a 6 point margin over Thunder Water Polo (34 to 28), Dallas Water Polo Club finished 3rd. In the Women’s Division, West Houston Water Polo also retained their victory from 2013 with Thunder Water Polo placing second (38 to 25), and Austin Water Polo Club finishing 3rd. The Connor Cup Age Group Award, new in 2014, completed earlier this Fall with Thunder Water Polo placing 1st, West Houston WP placing 2nd, and Longhorn Aquatics placing 3rd. Univ. of Texas Places 6th at CWPA Club Champs

The Univ. of Texas won two games and lost two games at the 2014 CWPA National Collegiate Club Championships to place 6th this weekend at Salt Lake City, UT. Texas had victories over Duke and Penn State and lost to San Diego State and Ohio State. Texas qualified for the CWPA National Club Champs by winnning the CWPA Texas Division. North Texas Thunder Wins Inagural Age Group Connor Cup

The North Texas Thunder WPC edged West Houston Water Polo by a slim point margin of 129 to 124 to win the inagural Southwest Zone Age Group Connor Cup award. This award accumulates placement points from 11 specific Southwest Zone age group events into one combined point summation over the course of a calendar year to recognize a winner. Three seasonal awards are also selected, with West Houston taking Spring and Summer, but Thunder winning the Fall. USAWP Champions Cup

Two teams from Thunder Water Polo and one team each from St. Marks and West Houston competed in the USAWP Champions Cup (14&Under) last week in Lewisville, TX near Dallas.  In the Boys division, the Thunder Boys placed 9th, followed by St. Mark’s at 12th.  In the Girls Divison, West Houston placed 11th, followed by Thunder in 12th.

USAWP Champions Cup in Dallas

The USA Water Polo TYR Champions Cup is this upcoming weekend in North Texas at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatic Center.  Thunder Water Polo is proud to host the event along with USA Water Polo and welcome all the teams to North Texas.  This event is an USA Water Polo National Championship for 14U/8th Grade & Younger athletes and will have teams come from throughout the country (from the east coast to the west coast) participating in a 24 team, three day tournament (12 boys teams, 12 girls teams).  Thunder Water Polo and Viper Pigeons are competing in the Girls Division.  Thunder Water Polo and St Marks WPC will be competing in the Boys Division.  All are encouraged to come out to the tournament to help welcome all the teams from across the country to the Southwest Zone as well as cheer on the local Southwest Zone teams.  The USA Water Polo TYR Champions Cup website is http://www.usawaterpolo.org/genrel/091514aai.html.  Below is the basic information for the tournament (including information for online streaming if you can’t make the tournament).
