Southwest Zone Champs and National Junior Olympic Information

This is a reminder that the entry deadline for the Southwest Zone Champs, roster deadline for Southwest Zone Champs, NJO Team Entries, and Athletes Club Affiliation/Age Verification is this upcoming Friday, May 23rd. Attached is all the Southwest Zone Champs Information. If you plan on trying to qualify for NJO’s, your team MUST enter both the Southwest Zone Champs and the National Junior Olympics online by Friday, May 23rd. For the Southwest Zone Champs, all athletes need to be GOLD members of USA Water Polo. I would recommend that you do not wait until the evening of Friday, May 23rd to attempt to enter or check your teams USA Water Polo membership status. For those teams NOT trying to Qualify for NJO’s, please see the notes below.

Southwest Zone Champs and NJO Qualifications

The Southwest Zone Championship tournament information will be located at the UT Swim Center on June 7-8, 2014. The Southwest Zone Championships will be the qualification/seeding tournament for the National Junior Olympics for the Southwest Zone. Teams do not need to be attempting to qualify for NJO’s in order to participate in the Southwest Zone Champs. Some of the highlights for the Southwest Zone Champs and National Junior Olympics are:

Entry Fee: The entry fee will be $250 per team. Make checks payable to Southwest Water Polo. Please send entry fee payments to Southwest Water Polo (for Southwest Zone Champs ONLY), 7750 North Macarthur Blvd, #120-275, Irving, TX 75063. Payments will not be accepted online for Southwest Zone Champs (mailed or brought to the tournament).

Athlete Eligibility: An athlete’s age for the Southwest Zone Champs and NJO’s is determined by their age on August 1st for both boys & girls (*see exception below). Athletes MUST be Gold Members of USA Water Polo in order to be entered into the Southwest Zone Championships and National Junior Olympics. Athletes also must complete the Age Verification online at the USA Water Polo website in order to be eligible to compete in either event. *The one exception to this rule will be for those graduating senior athletes who turn 19 before August 1st. These athletes can now play in the 18U Division as long as they graduate High School in May/June 2013. TEAMS NOT TRYING TO QUALIFY for NJO’s: Age Eligility will remain the same. Club Affiliation/Age Verification Deadline (NO EXCEPTIONS): Athletes and Coaches MUST be registered with the Club they intend to play with by Friday, May 23rd at 9:00 pm. Athletes will also need to have their Age Verification completed by this date. Athletes who turn 19 before August 1st AND graduated from high school in May/June must turn in their official transcript with USA Water Polo by this date. This deadline is for both Southwest Zone Championships and the National Junior Olympics. TEAMS NOT TRYING TO QUALIFY for NJO’s: All athletes need to have their ages verified. Failure to enter the Southwest Zone Championships will disqualify any NJO entry for the respective club’s team in a specific age/gender division. To enter the National Junior Olympics, please complete the online entry process at https://webpoint.usawaterpolo.com/wp15/Events2/ViewEvt.wp?EventID=9288 (Session #1) and/or https://webpoint.usawaterpolo.com/wp15/Events2/ViewEvt.wp?EventID=9294 (Session #2). Rosters for Southwest Zone Champs: Rosters for Southwest Zone Champs will be due Friday, May 23rd at 9:00 pm. Rosters for Southwest Zone Champs will only be accepted via the USA Water Polo roster verification system. More entry information is on the attached documents. There will be a roster “Lockdown Deadline” on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 9:00 pm. Any roster changes made between May 23rd and May 30th will incur a $100 late roster fee. No changes will be made to rosters after May 30th (no exceptions). TISCA Texas High School State Championships

In Austin this weekend, the Baytown Sterling girls defeated Houston Cypress Creek 10-7 and Dallas St. Mark’s boys defeated Houston Clear Creek 12-5 to both earn 2014 TISCA Texas High School State Water Polo Championships.

Girls MVP was Callie Woodruff from Baytown Sterling and girls Coach of Year was Allie Hill, also from Baytown Sterling.

Boys MVP was Timothy Simenc from Dallas St. Mark’s and boys Coach of Year was Mihai Oprea, also from Dallas St. Mark’s.

The Woodlands (Houston) boys and Houston Clear Creek girls each took 3rd place.

Fenton Trophy Series – 2014 Update

The Fenton Trophy is awarded annually to the team/club with the most cumulative points based on final standings in the four seasonal North Texas Water Polo Leagues. (For 2014: Fall 2013, Winter 2013-2014, Spring 2014, and Summer 2014). For each division of the various leagues, points are awarded based on finish to the top four teams: 5 points for first, 3 for second, 2 for third, and 1 for fourth (B Divisions and Open Divisions not included). The Fenton Trophy Series current standings can be viewed at http://thunderpolo.com/fenton-trophy-series-2014/ with Southlake-Grapevine currently placing first, Denton second, Flower Mound third, St Marks fourth, Rockwall fifth, and North Dallas in sixth place. The Fenton Trophy is named for George Fenton who is the current President of the Dallas Water Polo Club. George has been a member of the Dallas Water Polo Club for the past 20+ years and has been an integral part of the growth of water polo in North Texas at the youth levels beginning in Spring 2009.

North Texas Spring League – Championship Recap

North Texas Spring League – 2014- Championship Recap: On Sunday, April 27th at the Denton ISD Natatorium, the North Texas Spring League concluded with competitions in two divisions: 6th Grade U and 8th Grade U. The final League Game Day was the last of three Game Days this spring with the first one being Sunday, May 30th at St Marks and the second Game Day being Sunday, April 6th in Grapevine. Results from the first two League Game Days seeded the Championship Round for each division. In the 6th Grade & younger division, the Flower Mound team beat Denton 18-15 in the first place game with Southlake-Grapevine placing third. In the 8th Grade & Younger Division, Southlake-Grapevine beat St Marks in Sudden Victory 6-5 with Denton placing third and Flower Mound fourth. Again, congratulations to all the athletes/teams and the division champions. USA Water Polo Q&A and Age Group Clinic in Austin at UT Swim Center on May 2nd-3rd

Congratulations to all the teams competing in the Texas High School State Water Polo Championship this weekend. The Southwest Zone is also hosting the Texas Age Group State Water Polo Championship on Sunday, May 4th for 8th/6th Grade & Younger athletes also at the UT Swim Center. Good luck to all teams this weekend.

Chris Ramsey-CEO of USA Water Polo, Claudia Dodson-USA Water Polo Director-Club & Member Programs, and Genai Kerr-former USA Water Polo Men’s Olympic/National Team player, will be at the tournaments all weekend with Q&A/Meet & Greet Sessions, and an 8th/6th Grade & Younger Clinic on Saturday from 2:30-4:00 pm.

Chris Ramsey, CEO of USA Water Polo: Chris is responsible for carrying out the mission of USA Water Polo domestically and internationally. His work includes oversight of Olympic and national team programs, sport development, marketing and brand identity, international relations, along with finance and administration. His goals for the federation are sustained competitive excellence and national growth of the sport.

Claudia Dodson: Claudia joined USA Water Polo in January of 2011 as the Associate Director of Competition and became the Director of Club & Member Programs in late 2011. Claudia is no stranger to the game of water polo having played age group, high school, college and masters water polo. She also has served as a water polo referee, coach, parent, and club administrator.

Genai Kerr: Genai Kerr is a USA Water Polo Olympian, coach, mentor, and ambassador of the sport. As a member of the United States Men’s National Water Polo Team for 12 years, Genai played in the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2003 & 2007 Pan American Gold Medal games, and multiple World Championships. Genai played college water polo at UC Irvine and was a NCAA All-American in 1998 and 1999. Most recently he was named MVP of the 2012 US Open after he helped Newport Water Polo Foundation win the national championship.
